Microprocessor Simulator Description
The microprocessor simulation is based on the low eight bits of the Intel 8086 microprocessor. Sufficient instructions are simulated to write real programs. Simulated peripherals can be controlled with simple programs written by the learner. These include Traffic Lights, Seven Segment Displays, a Heater and Thermostat, a Stepper Motor and a Snake in a Maze. Teaching computer architecture and the "fetch execute cycle" to computing/ICT students is not easy. This product shows the inner workings of a simple, idealised computer in a very visual way. Learners can write short programs to control simulated peripherals like traffic lights. The software also introduces binary, hexadecimal and ASCII codes. Many computing syllabusses for the 16+ age range require these concepts. The simulator allows complex, university level concepts to be taught too. Examples include parameter passing, the stack and interrupt processing. Programs can be single stepped or run continuously. The instruction and stack pointers are animated. The contents of RAM can be seen changing. The CPU registers and flags are made visible. These instructions make it possible to write software and hardware interrupts as well as procedures.
