Engine RPM Description

Using the sound of the engine, accurately measure the RPM of motorcycles, single-engine airplanes, R/C models, race cars, chain saws, lawn mowers, etc.The pitch of the sound from an engine is precisely related to its RPM. That sound is analyzed in real-time using a Fourier Transform, along with some proprietary interpolation techniques to achieve close to 1 RPM resolution. In addition, we display the results of the Fourier Transform in a graph so you can see the sound spectrum produced by the engine.Note: If the sound of the engine is too muffled, irregular, or obscured by other noises, it may be impossible to lock on to the true engine RPM sound, especially for very low RPMs. The software provides for specifying a narrow RPM search range to help pick out the correct tone from the noise. There is also a tracking mode that will track gradual changes in RPM as an alternative to the fixed RPM search range. You can configure the width of the RPM search range from 5% to 60% of the nominal value and select which harmonics should be used for the analysis. A detailed manual is available from our support web page.The software is configurable for 2-cycle and 4-cycle engines, as well as a generic configuration for unusual cases, like a reduction gear. The overall RPM range is 500 to 90,000 RPM.
