zeroSSH Description

zeroSSH project is a cross-platform GUI frontend for listing and accessing SSH services advertised via Bonjour / ZeroConf. zeroSSH project is a cross-platform GUI frontend for listing and accessing SSH services advertised via Bonjour / ZeroConf. The release of the first beta version (0.1b) has been throughly tested under Microsoft Windows XP. It is expected to work under MacOSX and Linux as well, testing and support for these platforms is expected for the next release (0.2b)It should be noted that this is a WORK IN PROGRESS. The software is currently capable of locating bonjour-advertised SSH services and launching an SSH client. (PuTTY is bundled with the Windows executables) However, the interface is yet crude and unpolished. Future versions are planned to include bookmarking, sharing of bookmarks (via bonjour), SFTP support, as well as a variety of other features. We plan for this to be a fully-functional, cross-platform SSH frontend. Why?I think that ZeroConf isn’t just good for “making things easy” for the end-user, but also for easy administration. I’ve worked in numerous teams in the past that would provide support services for customers via SSH. Every time, we would find ourselves using some hodge-podge solution to manage SSH login information. My early solutions were shared spreadsheets, CGI scripts with database backends, and Wiki pages. In the end, it was a cut & paste nightmare.Later, I designed webpages with database backends that would export to PuTTY registry files, bash-completion scripts, and DNS zone files. This eliminated the cut & paste nightmare, but was more complex to maintain. Now, we have zeroconf! Our webpages no longer have to export configuration files for each SSH client, nor do they need to update our authoritative nameservers. The webpage simply pushes its data to Bonjour. Our clients run zeroSSH on Windows, MacOS, or Linux and automatically receive the list of our customer’s servers!Installation:- Make sure that Python and wxPython are installed.- Compile and install BonjourPY. Note, this is incompatible with Avahi. To use this package, Avahi must be removed or disabled — which we do NOT recommend. We plan to make a future release supporting Avahi. (FIXME)- Comment the ‘os.execl’ line calling putty.exe, uncomment the line calling ‘xterm’. (FIXME)- Run!What's New in This Release:· The software is currently capable of locating Bonjour-advertised SSH services and launching an SSH client.· The interface is still crude and unpolished, but mostly functional.
